Why Songs for Rights?

We can only stand up for human rights if we can recognise, name, and understand them.

Human rights education is focused on the active acquisition of knowledge, attitudes and skills about  the contents and instruments of human rights. It supports people to form an awareness of their own rights and those of others, and to acquire the skills to implement human rights in their own sphere of influence. Human rights education is a prerequisite for the realization of human rights.

Human rights education works towards a society in which the dignity and human rights of all are respected and protected. It must go beyond a discussion of the contents of human rights documents to serve the reflection of attitudes and actions. It is about challenging existing injustice and working towards concrete changes to prevent future injustice.

The use of music as a tool creates emotional appeal and sustainable internalization and at the same time provides a form of expression. The produced songs, video clips, concerts and other events can then be used for advocacy and promotion of human rights.

The human rights principles of non-discrimination, inclusion, participation and transparency are fundamental pillars of the Songs for Rights Approach.

In order to be able to implement the principle of participation and to enable the participants to influence the design of the learning process, we deliberately work with flexible methods. These offer the participants scope for decision-making on content and methodology as well as for linking to their own world of experience.
