History

The Songs for Rights – Human Rights Education through Music method was first developed and tested by Jochen Schell in the framework of the European Master in Childhood Studies and Children’s Rights at the Free University of Berlin between 2010 and 2012. Its pilot project was launched in Accra, Ghana in February 2012.

The pilot workshop and study showed the wide range of music’s positive effects on learning and peer-exchange. In particular, the pilot project highlighted the potential and added value of music to human rights education.

Since 2019, Songs for Rights has become a YEPP EUROPE initiative at the Institute for Community Education/International Academy Berlin (INA gGmbH) and has been further developed within the framework of YEPP EUROPE’s work towards youth and community empowerment.  Collaborations have also been carried out with human and children’s rights experts, such as Right Now and Articolo 12, and through further pilot projects in Germany and Italy.
